Serial Scrapbook–Entry 10

From the James Braddock Collection.

This scrapbook entry is something new, being kindly supplied by one of the site’s readers and not by myself (what can I say, things have been crazily busy at my law firm lately). The abovementioned reader, Mr. James Braddock, has very generously shared some striking professionally-colorized serial stills from his collection, which are reproduced below. I find it particularly interesting to see Spy Smasher in his original comic-book colors. The Captain Marvel and Captain America images have been retouched, as well as colorized; Mr. Braddock was experimenting with the idea of giving both characters a slightly closer resemblance to their comic-book counterparts.

  1. I confess that I am not normally a fan of colorization of B&W properties. But this work is truly quite outstanding. Thank you.

  2. Thanks, Jerry, and thanks Mr. Braddock! I never realized that there was a texture to Captain Marvel’s lightning bolt. I read the Fawcett comics before seeing the serial, and I guess I assumed that the lightning bolt was the same solid yellow color as the print version. He’s a handsome superhero in any medium!

Spy Smasher and his twin brother look great in the colorized image, and it’s even more impressive in color that you can see his hand resting on his late brother’s arm. They appeared quite often together in the serial. I’d love to see an explanation of how they did that back in the day.

And I don’t know how many times I’ve seen bullets go through Dick Tracy’s hat in the newspaper comic strips. He looks great in color!

  3. Truly outstanding photos, and a great addition to the site. Many thanks to Mr. Braddock for his generosity in sharing these.

  4. Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I’m glad you like them. I use photos that are made from original studio negatives so I get the highest level of detail. Because these serials were shot in black and white the costumes were made with grey fabric. Because of that, I really enjoy seeing these characters in full color. I plan on doing more of these so with Jerry’s approval I will be posting more of them. Stay tuned
